Strålevern er alle tiltak som iverksettes for å beskytte mennesker og miljø mot de skadelige virkningene av eksponering for ioniserende stråling: alfa-, beta-, gamma- og røntgenstråling.
I Frankrike spiller IRSN en avgjørende rolle som en uavhengig forvaltningsmyndighet, støttet av Institut de Radioprotection et de Sûreté Nucléaire (IRSN), som sørger for forvaltningen av dosimetriske data om arbeideres eksponering for radioaktivitet.
Noen typer stråling (alfa-, beta-, gamma- og røntgenstråling) kalles " ioniserende" fordi de har nok energi til å forårsake en endring i den elektriske ladningen til atomene de passerer gjennom (ionisering). Eksponering for ioniserende stråling tilsvarer derfor denne strålingens interaksjon med materie. Eksponeringen er vanligvis lav, men ved for eksempel en ulykke kan mennesker bli utsatt for høye doser ioniserende stråling.
Ekstern bestråling forårsaker ekstern bestråling og kan kontrolleres avhengig av varigheten av eksponeringen, avstanden fra strålekilden og bruk av beskyttelsesskjermer. En person som utsettes for en ekstern strålekilde (f.eks. røntgen), vil aldri bære på det minste spor av radioaktivitet.
Radioaktiv forurensning defineres ofte som "uønsket tilstedeværelse av radioaktive stoffer på overflaten av eller i et hvilket som helst medium, inkludert menneskekroppen". Kontaminering er nødvendigvis et resultat av spredning av et radioaktivt stoff, for eksempel som følge av uforsiktig håndtering.
Radioaktive stoffer kommer fra en rekke ulike kilder og kan være i fast, flytende eller gassform.

Enhetene som brukes til å måle radioaktivitet og dens virkninger, er becquerel (Bq) og sievert (Sv).
Becquerel :
Becquerel er en enhet som stammer fra radioaktivitet. Becquerel er definert som aktiviteten til en radionuklid som henfaller med én desintegrasjon per sekund.
Le Sievert :
Sievert er et mål på helseeffekten av lave nivåer av ioniserende stråling på menneskekroppen. Den er definert som doseekvivalenten, eller den mengden ioniserende stråling som trengs for å gi samme skade på menneskelig vev som én Gray (Gy) røntgenstråling.
Regelverket for beskyttelse av arbeidstakere mot virkningene av ioniserende stråling er basert på harmonisering av nasjonale forskrifter, folkehelse- og arbeidslover og EU-direktiver. Dette rammeverket omfatter forordninger og pålegg som regulerer beskyttelsen av arbeidstakere mot risikoen ved eksponering for ioniserende stråling. Dette rammeverket følger også anbefalingene fra Den internasjonale strålevernkommisjonen (ICRP).
Forstå ALARA-prinsippet og reduser eksponeringen (As Low As Reasonably Achievable).
Strålevernansvarlig er ansvarlig for at mennesker og miljø beskyttes mot skadelige virkninger av ioniserende stråling. Han eller hun må spesielt iverksette tiltak for å minimere eksponeringen for stråling, for eksempel ved å bruke blyskjerming eller holde en viss avstand til strålekilder. Den kompetente personen skal også sørge for at arbeidstakere og allmennheten blir informert om risikoen.

Overvåking, forebygging, beskyttelse og adgangskontroll i risikoområder har som mål å forhindre eller begrense virkningene av ioniserende stråling som arbeidstakere og publikum utsettes for. Dette inkluderer overvåking av individuell eksponering for ioniserende stråling.
Dosimetri er obligatorisk for alle arbeidstakere som kan bli utsatt for ioniserende stråling (i overvåkede eller kontrollerte områder).
De mottatte dosene akkumuleres over en forhåndsdefinert periode.
Det finnes flere teknologier: radiofotoluminescens (RPL), optisk stimulert luminescens (OSL) og termisk stimulert luminescens (TLD).
Operativ dosimetri er obligatorisk for tilgang til kontrollerte områder. Det er et supplement til passiv dosimetri og bruker et aktivt dosimeter til å måle dosehastighet og integrert doseekvivalent i sanntid . Apparatet måler energimengden som absorberes av arbeiderens kropp, og viser den på en digital skjerm. Den største fordelen med dette systemet er at det gir informasjon i sanntid, slik at beskyttelsestiltak kan iverksettes umiddelbart hvis det er nødvendig. Denne typen dosimeter bæres i midjen, på høyde med hoftekammen eller på brystet, og må bæres hele tiden når man arbeider i et kontrollert område. Et alarmsystem som er innebygd i dosimeteret, varsler arbeideren eller kontrollsenteret hvis den individuelle dosen eller dosehastigheten når et visst nivå av radioaktivitet.
Bærbar radiametri brukes til å detektere kontaminering og muliggjør rask og umiddelbar måling av røntgen-, gamma- og nøytronstråling i felten. Det gir ekstra støtte til beskyttelse og sikkerhet for arbeidere under operasjoner.

Verktøyene omfatter dosimetre, strålingsdetektorer og personlig verneutstyr som hansker og verneklær. Kontinuerlig opplæring av arbeiderne er også avgjørende for å sikre effektiv beskyttelse.
Eksponering refererer til mengden stråling som finnes i omgivelsene, mens dosen måler mengden stråling som absorberes av en person. Dosimetri gjør det mulig å overvåke og registrere disse dosene for hver enkelt person.
